Zeus, myth says, released two eagles from the ends of the earth; where they crossed he dropped the omphalos — the navel stone — at Delphi. For twelve centuries the Pythia, seated by tradition over a chasm in Apollo's temple, delivered oracles that steered colonies, wars and kings. Geological work (de Boer, Hale & Chanton, 2001) found two faults crossing beneath the temple and traces of light hydrocarbon gases in nearby spring water — including ethylene, a sweet-smelling mild anaesthetic — from the bitumen-rich limestone. Whether enough gas ever reached the Pythia to cause trance is still debated.

Notable facts

  1. The omphalos stone was carved with a net pattern and flanked by golden eagles.
  2. Two geological faults literally intersect beneath the temple's adyton.
  3. Inscribed at the temple entrance: 'Know thyself' and 'Nothing in excess'.

Through the theories

How each theory reads Delphi. Follow a theory to see its verdict and every other site it claims.

Axis MundiEstablished anthropology

The omphalos — the navel stone — marked where Zeus's two eagles met, flying from the ends of the earth.

Sacred GeometryA spectrum

Proponents claim treasury and temple placement at Delphi follow harmonic proportions.

Ley LinesMostly chance

On the Apollo–Michael axis, which continues from the Michael shrines through Delphi to Delos and Rhodes — Apollo's line through his own sanctuaries.

Earth GridNo measurable evidence

The mapped fault intersection and the (contested) evidence for gas make Delphi the most cited real example of a site claimed to be chosen for a genuine geophysical anomaly.
