Myth made Delos a wandering island fixed in place for Leto to bear Apollo and Artemis. It became the Aegean's holiest sanctuary and its treasury: purified twice, until in 426 BCE Athens decreed no birth or death might occur on the island at all. The Terrace of the Lions, marble beasts snarling toward Apollo's birth lake, still guards the axis. In line-lore, Delos is a station where the Michael axis becomes the Apollo axis, running on toward Rhodes.

Notable facts

  1. All graves were exhumed and moved to a neighbouring island in the great purification.
  2. The colossal Naxian Apollo stood some 9 metres tall; it now lies broken, with parts of its torso still on Delos and its left foot in the British Museum.
  3. Almost the whole island is an archaeological site — excavated continuously since 1872.

Sky AlignmentsEstablished science

Apollo as sun god: the axis is read by proponents as a solar path fossilised in sanctuaries.

Axis MundiEstablished anthropology

An island anchored in the sea so a god could be born — then purified until neither birth nor death could touch it again.
